The Rivers State Police Command has dismissed four officers over their alleged involvement in the fatal shooting of Anthony A. Obodo, a graduate of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), during a police pursuit in Port Harcourt.
The incident reportedly occurred on August 27, 2026, when officers attached to the Agip Police Division attempted to stop a Lexus vehicle with tinted windows. According to the police, the driver allegedly refused to stop and sped away, leading officers to give chase.
During the pursuit, Corporal Alfred Louis reportedly fired his weapon, hitting Obodo. The victim was taken to a hospital for medical treatment but later succumbed to the injuries sustained in the shooting.
Following an investigation and internal disciplinary proceedings, the Rivers State Police Command said four officers were found culpable and subsequently dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force.
The affected officers are ASP Fabian Kpeanabari, Inspector Solomon Nworgu, Corporal Alfred Louis and Police Constable Michael Ejokwu.
The command explained that the officers were subjected to orderly room proceedings, where they were found responsible for offences connected to the incident. It added that their dismissal would not prevent further legal action, as the officers are also expected to face criminal prosecution in court.
Inspector Solomon Nworgu reportedly fled after the incident. Police authorities said efforts were ongoing to locate and apprehend him so that he could face the law.
Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to holding officers accountable for misconduct and violations of citizens’ rights.
Adepoju maintained that no member of the police force was above the law, stressing that officers must operate within the boundaries of their legal responsibilities and respect the rights of members of the public.
The Commissioner said the disciplinary action demonstrated the command’s position against abuse of police powers and misconduct, while reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, accountability and lawful policing across Rivers State.

The dismissal of the four officers comes amid continued calls for greater accountability within Nigeria’s security agencies, particularly in cases involving the alleged misuse of firearms and excessive use of force against civilians.
