The Abia State Government has announced fresh progress in efforts to restore up to 50 megawatts (MW) of grid electricity to the Aba Ring-Fenced Area, while also advancing plans to secure an alternative gas supply for the Geometric Power plant.
The development follows recent engagements between the state government, Geometric Power Aba Limited (GPAL), the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC).
According to a statement issued by the Abia State Ministry of Power and Public Utilities and signed by the Commissioner, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, discussions with the key stakeholders have resulted in progress toward strengthening electricity supply in Aba and surrounding communities.
The planned restoration of the 50MW grid connection is expected to provide an important backup option for emergency situations. It will also help improve the resilience of the electricity network as demand continues to increase among manufacturers, businesses, commercial operators and households within the Aba area.
The state government stressed that a dependable electricity system requires more than one source of supply. In line with this approach, it is working with Geometric Power, NDPHC and other stakeholders to establish an alternative gas supply arrangement for the Geometric Power generating facility.
The proposed gas arrangement is expected to reduce the plant’s reliance on a single gas source and help limit disruptions that could affect electricity generation.
The government described the dual-track approach of strengthening grid access while improving gas security as an important step toward supporting Aba’s industrial and commercial activities.
Aba remains a major economic centre in southeastern Nigeria, with electricity playing a critical role in manufacturing, small and medium-sized enterprises, commerce and other productive activities. Improved power reliability could therefore support business operations, investment and employment across the area.
The state government said discussions are continuing with relevant federal agencies, electricity market operators, gas suppliers and other stakeholders to resolve the remaining technical, commercial and regulatory requirements.
The Ministry of Power and Public Utilities also thanked electricity consumers across Aba for their patience during the ongoing efforts. It acknowledged the cooperation of Geometric Power, NISO and NDPHC in advancing the process.
The government further assured residents that additional updates would be provided as work on the initiatives progresses.
The Abia State Government reaffirmed its commitment to developing a more stable, reliable and sustainable electricity system capable of supporting industrialisation, attracting investment, creating employment opportunities and improving living conditions for residents.
