Abia State has been identified as the most suitable location to host a proposed Stroke and Neurovascular Centre in Nigeria, following its participation in the 2026 Sweden-Africa Neurosurgery Symposium held in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The development represents another significant milestone in the state’s healthcare transformation efforts under the administration of Governor Alex Otti, particularly in strengthening specialised medical services and expanding access to quality healthcare.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday, November 2, 2026, while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Otti at Government House, Umuahia.
According to the Commissioner, Abia’s selection reflects the progress recorded in healthcare delivery, alongside the availability of qualified medical specialists and the state’s growing capacity to provide advanced medical services.
He described the development as a major achievement for the present administration, noting that the state’s Ministry of Health had also recently received national recognition as a self-care champion.
Prince Kanu explained that the recognition underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare institutions and promoting healthy practices, preventive healthcare and improved lifestyles among residents.
He further disclosed that the achievements of Abia’s ongoing health sector reforms were presented at the international symposium, where participants examined the increasing burden of stroke across Africa, particularly in Nigeria.
Discussions at the event also highlighted the urgent need for a modern stroke and neurovascular facility capable of providing comprehensive diagnosis, treatment and management of stroke-related conditions, not only for Nigerians but also for patients across West Africa.
The Commissioner noted that the state government’s participation in the international gathering, through the Ministry of Health, was approved to explore strategic partnerships, encourage international collaboration and attract opportunities that would further strengthen specialised healthcare delivery in Abia.
Abia Strengthens Public Health Emergency Preparedness
Beyond the proposed specialised medical centre, the state government is also taking steps to improve its preparedness and response to public health emergencies.
Prince Kanu revealed that the Ministry of Health had established a multi-sectoral technical working group responsible for strengthening frontline preparedness and coordinating responses to potential disease outbreaks.
He explained that the group had developed an Ebola preparedness and response plan for the state through various government investments and strategic interventions.
The Commissioner also highlighted the government’s commitment to deploying modern medical technology to improve healthcare services, particularly in specialised areas of medicine.
As part of these interventions, the government has completed the Infectious Disease Hospital in Aba, alongside an infectious disease facility and specialist hospital in Umuahia. These facilities are expected to strengthen the state’s capacity to manage Ebola and other infectious diseases.
Government Intensifies Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign
The Commissioner also highlighted recent activities organised to commemorate World Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
He explained that the programme was coordinated by the Office of the Wife of the Governor in collaboration with relevant organisations and the Ministries of Health, Women Affairs, and Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection.
The initiative focused on increasing public awareness of breast cancer, encouraging preventive health practices and educating women on the importance of regular medical screening for early detection.
Meanwhile, Prince Kanu disclosed that Abia recorded no cases of major diseases of public health concern during the period under review, covering October 18 to November 1, 2026.
The diseases monitored included Ebola, Lassa fever, COVID-19, diphtheria, cholera and avian influenza.
Abia Expands Agricultural Investment Across 17 LGAs
On agriculture, the Commissioner announced encouraging progress in the state’s agricultural intervention programme, which is being implemented across all 17 local government areas.
He explained that the initiative, undertaken in partnership with the local government areas, is designed to establish sustainable agricultural enterprises, attract private-sector investments, improve food production and create employment opportunities.
According to him, the broader objective is to strengthen agricultural value chains, improve food security and develop viable economic opportunities for residents across the state.
Pocket Layout Housing Scheme Attracts Overwhelming Interest
Providing an update on the state’s housing programme, Prince Kanu disclosed that the Pocket Layout housing development had attracted an impressive number of applications, exceeding the available residential units.
He noted that the government was committed to ensuring that the allocation process was conducted fairly, transparently and equitably.
The Commissioner explained that the government was considering the adoption of a lottery system to guarantee credibility and prevent irregularities in the allocation exercise.
He said the overwhelming response demonstrated growing public confidence in the state’s housing initiatives and the willingness of residents to invest in residential development.
Prince Kanu further revealed that a comprehensive needs assessment was ongoing across existing government housing estates and layouts to identify infrastructure deficiencies and determine areas requiring urgent attention.
The assessment is expected to guide government interventions in addressing infrastructure challenges, including internal roads, electricity, security facilities, utilities and other essential amenities needed to improve living conditions within the estates.
He reaffirmed that the government’s housing interventions were aimed at ensuring that the residential needs of Abia residents were adequately addressed in the coming months and years.
173 Housing Units Record More Than 500 Applications
Also speaking during the briefing, the Commissioner for Housing, Architect Chiemela Uzoije, confirmed that construction work was ongoing at the Pocket Layout.
He disclosed that the project comprises 173 residential units but had already attracted more than 530 applications, indicating significant demand for the available housing opportunities.
Architect Uzoije assured prospective applicants that the allocation process would be different from previous practices, stressing that the government was determined to conduct a free, fair and transparent exercise.
Abia Government Addresses Concerns Over Federal Housing Estates
On the issue of abandoned federal housing estates, the Special Adviser to the Governor, Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma, emphasised the importance of media scrutiny and public accountability in ensuring that government projects deliver meaningful benefits to citizens.
He maintained that the media had an important responsibility to hold public officeholders accountable, particularly regarding federal housing projects that had previously been flagged off but remained uncompleted.
Mr Ekeoma explained that the Abia State Government had already undertaken fundamental responsibilities, including providing the necessary land and fulfilling other preliminary requirements to facilitate project execution.
The development of the proposed Stroke and Neurovascular Centre, alongside ongoing investments in infectious disease management, agricultural expansion and housing infrastructure, highlights the range of interventions being pursued by the Abia State Government.
If successfully actualised, the proposed medical centre could position Abia as an important destination for specialised neurological healthcare in Nigeria and the wider West African region.
