A suspected vandalism syndicate operating in Umuahia has been dismantled following the arrest of four men caught in the act of looting public property. The suspects were apprehended by members of the Amuzukwu Vigilante group while allegedly removing roofing materials from Amuzukwu Primary School.
According to local sources, the suspects were intercepted during the operation and found with items already stripped from the school premises. Further checks reportedly uncovered additional electrical components believed to have been stolen earlier from a church within the city, pointing to a broader pattern of coordinated theft targeting community institutions.
The arrested individuals were publicly paraded at Mbara Ama Amuzukwu alongside the recovered items, drawing attention to the growing concern over vandalism in the area. Community members expressed relief at the arrest, noting that repeated attacks on schools and places of worship had disrupted activities and caused financial strain.
Authorities confirmed that the suspects, who are said to be from a different community, were handed over to the Abia State Homeland Security Agency for further action. The handover was carried out by the vigilante group, highlighting ongoing collaboration between local security outfits and government agencies.
Speaking on the incident, the agency’s Public Relations Officer, Ezinwanne Alili, condemned the destruction and theft of public assets. She emphasized that efforts are being intensified to protect government facilities and community infrastructure across the state.
The suspects have since been transferred to the Nigeria Police Force, where they are expected to undergo a full investigation before facing possible prosecution.
