The Abia State Police Command has rescued a medical doctor who was abducted in the state and arrested four suspects, including a Point of Sale (PoS) operator allegedly linked to the collection of ransom paid by the victim’s family.
The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Wilfred Afolabi, disclosed the development on Friday in Umuahia while briefing journalists on the Command’s achievements since he assumed office.
According to the Commissioner, the doctor, identified as Dr. Ikenna Ilo, was kidnapped on August 19, 2026, but was successfully rescued following actionable intelligence gathered by police operatives.
CP Afolabi explained that immediately after receiving information about the abduction, police operatives commenced intelligence-driven operations to track the victim and the kidnappers.
He said the movement of the vehicle used in the operation was traced towards Imo State, leading the Abia Command to work with the Imo State Police Command to strengthen the rescue effort.
The Commissioner confirmed that the kidnapped doctor was eventually rescued unharmed.
He further disclosed that four suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident. The suspects allegedly included individuals involved in dismantling the vehicle’s tracking device and a PoS operator accused of receiving ransom money on behalf of the kidnappers.
“Three other suspects who were involved in the dismantling of the tracker in the vehicle and the POS operators who received ransom are in our custody,” the Commissioner said, adding that investigations were still ongoing.
According to him, the police are intensifying efforts to identify and arrest other members of the alleged criminal syndicate involved in the kidnapping operation.
CP Afolabi also highlighted other security operations carried out by the Command since his assumption of office, saying several suspected criminals had been arrested across Abia State.
He noted that firearms, ammunition and suspected stolen property were recovered during some of the operations.
The Commissioner added that the Command had also arrested suspects in connection with alleged defilement, vandalism and other criminal offences committed in different parts of the state.
He assured residents that the police would continue to rely on intelligence gathering, inter-agency collaboration and targeted operations to tackle kidnapping and other forms of criminality across Abia.

The successful rescue of Dr. Ikenna Ilo and the arrest of the suspects, he said, demonstrate the Command’s determination to disrupt criminal networks and strengthen public safety in the state.
