Army Arrests 19 Suspected Pipeline Vandals in Abia, Hands Them Over to NSCDC

By Boniface Okoro, Umuahia

Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested 19 suspected pipeline vandals at Nkwonta, along the Isuikwuato–ABSU Road in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State, as part of ongoing efforts to protect critical national infrastructure.

The suspects were arrested on Saturday, October 24, 2026, by troops of the 143 Rangers Battalion, Ovim, and subsequently handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Umuahia for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Speaking to journalists about the operation, the Commander of the 143 Rangers Battalion, Ovim, Lieutenant Colonel A. M. Rabe, said the arrest followed months of intelligence gathering, surveillance, routine patrols and coordinated ambush operations.

Rabe explained that troops deployed to the Uturu response area had been monitoring the suspected vandals for approximately three months before making the breakthrough.

According to him, the operation forms part of the Army’s broader commitment to combating pipeline vandalism, safeguarding public assets and protecting critical infrastructure within its area of responsibility.

Suspects Allegedly Offered ₦1 Million Bribe

The Army commander disclosed that the suspects allegedly offered troops ₦1 million to allow them to continue their illegal activities. However, the soldiers reportedly rejected the offer.

Rabe said the money would be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and necessary legal action. He also revealed that additional attempts were made to secure the suspects’ release after their arrest, but the efforts were unsuccessful.

He reaffirmed the Army’s determination to collaborate with other security agencies and relevant authorities to protect national assets and ensure the safety of lives and property.

Addressing reports that a police officer might be among the suspects, Rabe said no official identification establishing such a status was found during the arrest.

He maintained that the identity and possible affiliation of any suspect would be determined through further investigation by the appropriate authorities.

Isuikwuato Mayor Commends Army

Reacting to the development, the Mayor of Isuikwuato Local Government Area and Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Abia State chapter, Mr. Chinedu Ekeke, commended the Army for its intervention.

Ekeke said the arrest was a significant achievement in the fight against the growing incidence of vandalism targeting public infrastructure in the area.

He disclosed that he had issued a public notice shortly before the arrest, urging parents and community leaders to caution their children against engaging in activities that damage public property.

According to the mayor, the assets targeted by vandals in Isuikwuato include pipelines, high-tension electricity cables and roofing sheets belonging to a piggery project under construction by the local government council.

He expressed concern that the perpetrators were becoming increasingly bold, adding that the Army’s action would help strengthen efforts to protect public investments and discourage further acts of vandalism.

19 Suspects, Trailer of Cut Pipes Handed Over

The 19 suspects reportedly comprised 13 loaders, two cutters, three drivers and one conductor. A trailer containing cut pipeline sections was also handed over to the NSCDC alongside the suspects for further investigation.

During their presentation, some of the suspects gave differing accounts of how they became involved in the operation.

Some of the loaders claimed they had been told they were going to load scrap materials and said they initially refused to work when they discovered the pipes. They alleged that the person who recruited them assured them that the Army was aware of the activity.

The truck driver, meanwhile, claimed that a person identified as Benjamin contacted him to transport scrap materials from Isuikwuato to Aba.

The driver and some of the loaders also alleged that their engagement was arranged through an intermediary acting on behalf of an individual they identified as Jambo, whom they described as a scrap dealer.

These claims have yet to be independently established, and the suspects’ individual roles remain subject to investigation by the relevant authorities.

Security Agencies Intensify Efforts Against Infrastructure Vandalism

The arrest highlights ongoing security concerns over the destruction and theft of critical infrastructure in Isuikwuato and other parts of Abia State.

Pipeline vandalism and the theft of public assets can threaten infrastructure safety, disrupt essential services and impose additional costs on government and affected operators.

The handover of the suspects to the NSCDC is expected to facilitate further investigation into the alleged activities, identify other individuals who may be connected to the operation and determine the appropriate legal steps.

The Army reiterated its commitment to working with security agencies, local government authorities and community stakeholders to prevent infrastructure vandalism and protect public assets across the state.
