Legislative Track: Ikwuano North and South LGAs Bill Sponsored by Obi Aguocha Passes Second Reading

A legislative proposal seeking to create Ikwuano North and Ikwuano South Local Government Areas from the existing Ikwuano Local Government Area in Abia State has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.

The bill, identified as HB-2592, is sponsored by Rt. Hon. Obi Aguocha, Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency in the 10th National Assembly. It seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, to provide for the creation of the two proposed local government areas and address related matters.

Announcing the development under his legislative track record, Aguocha congratulated the people of Ikwuano and Abia State, describing the bill’s progress as an important step towards achieving the proposed restructuring of the local government area.

The bill’s passage through second reading marks a significant stage in the legislative process, allowing it to proceed to further scrutiny and consideration. It is currently at the committee stage, where its provisions are expected to receive additional examination before subsequent legislative action.

According to the legislative update, the proposal is expected to be presented before the Committee of the Whole for further consideration and approval as it advances through the legislative process.

If ultimately approved through the required constitutional amendment procedures, the proposal would establish Ikwuano North and Ikwuano South as separate local government areas carved out of the present Ikwuano LGA.

The proposed division is a key legislative initiative for Ikwuano, with its progress attracting attention among constituents and stakeholders interested in the area’s administrative future.

While the bill has passed its second reading, it has not yet become law. Further legislative consideration and the applicable constitutional amendment requirements must be completed before the proposed local government areas can be formally established.
