BREAKING: FRSC Bans Personnel From Escorting Politicians

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has prohibited its personnel from providing escort services to politicians during campaigns ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, reaffirming its commitment to road safety and professional conduct.

The directive was issued by ACM Abimbola Owolabi, Zonal Commanding Officer of RS6, during her maiden visit to the FRSC Cross River State Command in Calabar on Wednesday.

Owolabi warned that FRSC personnel must not deploy official patrol vehicles or sirens for political activities or private engagements, stressing that the resources of the road safety agency should be used strictly for authorised duties.

She specifically ruled out the use of FRSC patrol vehicles and sirens for activities such as weddings, funeral processions and other private events, emphasising the need for discipline and accountability among officers.

The zonal commander also provided clear instructions for personnel assigned to campaign venues during the forthcoming electioneering period. According to her, officers deployed to such locations must concentrate exclusively on traffic management and ensuring the smooth movement of vehicles and other road users.

She explained that the responsibility of FRSC personnel at campaign grounds should be to prevent traffic congestion, minimise the risk of road crashes and protect the safety of motorists, pedestrians and other road users.

The directive comes as political parties and their candidates prepare for the 2027 general elections, a period often characterised by increased vehicular movement, large gatherings and heightened traffic activity around campaign venues.

By restricting its personnel to official responsibilities, the FRSC aims to maintain operational discipline and ensure that its resources are not diverted to political or personal interests.

The agency’s position also underscores the importance of impartiality in public service, particularly during election periods when government institutions are expected to perform their statutory duties without undue political influence.

With the 2027 campaigns approaching, the directive serves as a reminder that FRSC personnel are expected to prioritise road safety, enforce traffic regulations and protect lives rather than provide escorts for politicians or participate in private engagements.

The Corps is expected to maintain its focus on reducing road crashes, managing traffic effectively and ensuring safer roads for Nigerians throughout the electioneering period.
