Cost of Living: FG Approves 90-Day Plan to Ease Nigerians’ Economic Burden

The Federal Government has approved a 90-day economic action plan designed to ease the rising cost of living, improve food affordability, attract investments and accelerate the delivery of projects that directly benefit Nigerians.

The National Economic Council (NEC), chaired by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, adopted the plan during its 161st meeting held on Thursday, October 22, 2026. The initiative is aimed at translating ongoing economic reforms into tangible improvements in the living conditions of households and the operating environment for businesses.

Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele presented the proposed framework, which outlines priority measures for addressing pressing economic challenges and ensuring that the benefits of government policies reach ordinary Nigerians.

The 90-day plan focuses on five major areas: making food more affordable, harmonising taxes, completing high-impact infrastructure projects, removing barriers to investment and implementing regulated support measures for households.

These priorities are expected to strengthen economic coordination, reduce avoidable costs and create an environment that supports productivity, business expansion and improved household welfare.

As part of efforts to enhance accountability, NEC also approved the establishment of a national dashboard to monitor projects across the federation. The platform is expected to improve transparency in project implementation and provide a clearer picture of how public resources are being deployed.

Particular attention will be given to funds saved following the removal of petrol subsidies, with the council emphasising the need for effective utilisation of these resources to deliver measurable benefits to citizens.

The council further underscored the importance of stronger collaboration between the federal and state governments, noting that coordinated implementation would be essential to ensuring that economic reforms translate into improved living standards.

Speaking at the meeting, Vice-President Shettima urged state governors to prioritise policies and programmes that address the everyday needs of Nigerians. He specifically highlighted affordable transportation, accessible healthcare and employment generation as areas requiring urgent and sustained attention.

NEC also endorsed a joint funding framework to support the adoption of compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles. The initiative is intended to promote alternative transportation options and help reduce commuting costs, particularly for Nigerians who depend on public transport.

The emphasis on transport affordability reflects the broader objective of easing the financial pressure on households while supporting more efficient and sustainable mobility systems.

Although the approval represents an important policy step, the effectiveness of the 90-day plan will depend on how quickly the agreed measures are implemented and the extent to which they produce measurable results.

For millions of Nigerians facing high food prices, transportation expenses and other essential living costs, the key expectation is that the initiative will deliver practical relief rather than remain a policy commitment.

As implementation progresses, attention will focus on the performance of federal and state authorities, the transparency of public spending and the ability of the measures to improve affordability, stimulate investment and create employment opportunities.

The success of the plan will ultimately be judged by its impact on household purchasing power, business activity and the overall cost of meeting basic needs across the country.
