Adebayo Adelabu resigns as Nigeria’s Power Minister to focus on his Oyo governorship ambition ahead of the 2026 race.

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has officially tendered his resignation, signaling a renewed push toward his long-standing ambition to become governor of Oyo State. His resignation letter, received by the Presidency on April 22, 2026, confirms that he will step down from office effective April 30, 2026.


In the letter addressed to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Adelabu explained that his decision was driven by the need to fully commit to his gubernatorial aspiration an ambition he has nurtured since 2016.

He referenced his previous role as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, noting that his resignation from that position in 2018 was also part of his political journey toward leading Oyo State.

Adelabu expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for entrusting him with the leadership of Nigeria’s power sector. The outgoing minister stated that his decision to resign ahead of schedule was intended to ensure a seamless transition, allowing for proper handover of responsibilities within the ministry.
