Abia Govt Orders Isi Gate Traders’ Relocation to Okigwe Park Ahead of Afara Market Completion

From Mark Chukwu , Umuahia

The Abia State Government has directed traders operating along the busy Isi Gate axis in Umuahia to relocate temporarily to Okigwe Park as part of ongoing urban renewal efforts.

According to the state’s Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, the move is aimed at decongesting the Isi Gate area while construction progresses on the new relief market at Afara. He disclosed this while briefing journalists after the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

Kanu explained that compensation has already been paid to affected landowners at the Afara site, with perimeter fencing completed and work ongoing on a retaining wall. As an interim measure, traders will occupy Okigwe Park until the relief market is ready for use.

He further revealed that commercial vehicles currently using Okigwe Park will be relocated to the soon-to-be commissioned Umuahia Central Bus Terminal. The facility, nearing completion, is expected to play a key role in the planned Abia Green Shuttle Bus Service scheme.

Supporting infrastructure for the transport system including charging stations, ticketing platforms, bus shelters, and improved road junctions has already been put in place. Kanu noted that once operational, the initiative will position Umuahia among Nigerian cities with modern and efficient public transportation systems.

In a related development, the Greater Ohafia Development Authority has completed several infrastructure projects awaiting commissioning. These include key road networks and the Afiankwo Isiama Daily Market, which are expected to boost trade and enhance economic activities in the region.

The state government, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Housing, is also set to flag off the construction of a Federal Housing Estate in Umuahia. The project, located along Ubani-Uzuskoli Road in Umuahia North, aims to expand access to affordable housing, improve living standards, and promote sustainable urban growth.

The groundbreaking ceremony is expected to attract government officials, development partners, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders, marking a significant milestone in the state’s housing and infrastructure agenda.

Additionally, Kanu disclosed that discussions with the Nigerian Railway Corporation are at an advanced stage for the construction of a new railway station in Umuahia. The proposed station will be situated near the Central Bus Terminal and is designed to integrate rail transport with commercial and retail hubs to stimulate economic activity.

To enhance connectivity, a network of access roads is also planned for development around the area. Meanwhile, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, emphasized the government’s strategic role in driving these initiatives.
