NNPC Limited has announced a significant advancement in Nigeria’s energy infrastructure with the successful completion of the River Niger segment of the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) Gas Pipeline. The milestone was delivered by its subsidiary, the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company, marking a major step toward strengthening the country’s gas transmission capacity.
The OB3 pipeline, spanning 130 kilometres, is designed to transport up to 2 billion standard cubic feet of gas daily. With the successful crossing beneath the River Niger, the project now unlocks enhanced energy distribution, improved supply reliability, and broader support for Nigeria’s industrial and economic growth.
The crossing, completed approximately two kilometres below the riverbed, required advanced engineering techniques. The project team collaborated with PCE Nig. Limited, deploying horizontal directional drilling (HDD) technology to navigate one of the most technically demanding sections of the pipeline.
Speaking on the development, Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, described the achievement as a landmark moment for Nigeria’s gas sector. He emphasized that the successful completion demonstrates strong project execution, technical expertise, and a commitment to excellence.
Ojulari noted that the OB3 River Niger crossing builds on previous successes, including the AKK pipeline crossing completed in 2025. He highlighted that the project reflects NNPC’s growing engineering capabilities and its determination to deliver complex infrastructure in challenging environments like the Niger Delta.
He also acknowledged the support of the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that the administration’s Gas-to-Prosperity agenda has played a crucial role in enabling such projects. Appreciation was also extended to the NNPC Board, led by Chairman Ahmadu Musa Kida, for their guidance and oversight.
Reaffirming the company’s mandate, Ojulari stated that NNPC remains committed to leveraging Nigeria’s oil and gas resources to improve living standards, boost industrialisation, and ensure energy security nationwide.
