The Federal Ministry of Education has officially launched the Nigerian Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI), a technology-driven initiative aimed at transforming education planning, enhancing learner tracking, and improving data-driven decision-making across Nigeria’s education sector.
The initiative was unveiled during the National Stakeholders’ Workshop on NEDI held in Abuja on May 14, 2026. Speaking at the event, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa described the platform as a major reform designed to establish a unified and reliable national education database for the country.
According to the Minister, the Nigerian Education Data Infrastructure will integrate information from basic, secondary, technical, vocational, and tertiary institutions into a centralized cloud-based platform powered by artificial intelligence. The system will also synchronize data from key educational agencies, including the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, West African Examinations Council, National Examinations Council, and NELFUND.
Dr. Alausa explained that the platform would serve as a single trusted source of education data in Nigeria, helping policymakers and stakeholders make informed decisions while strengthening transparency and accountability within the sector.
A major feature of the NEDI platform is the introduction of the National Learner Identity Number, which will be linked to the National Identity Number (NIN). The government said this innovation will enable effective tracking of learners from school enrollment through graduation and eventual employment.
The Minister added that the system is expected to help tackle identity fraud, examination malpractice, and the operation of illegal “miracle centres” that have long undermined the credibility of the education system.
The Federal Government revealed that more than 32 million learners and over 220,000 schools across 21 states have already been captured on the platform, marking significant progress in the implementation phase.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging digital technology and credible data systems to build a transparent, inclusive, and globally competitive education sector capable of meeting modern demands.
