The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned alleged statements and actions attributed to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Hon. Chris Nkwonta regarding the 2027 governorship election, describing them as damaging to the party’s unity, discipline and electoral ambitions.
The party’s State Working Committee (SWC) made its position known in a communiqué issued on Monday, August 10, 2026, following a meeting where members deliberated extensively on recent public comments and actions allegedly linked to the two prominent APC figures.
According to the communiqué, the SWC unanimously expressed concern that the reported remarks could undermine the confidence of party members and supporters as the APC intensifies its mobilisation across the 184 wards in Abia State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The committee specifically referred to a reported television interview in which Senator Orji Uzor Kalu was allegedly quoted as saying that Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party would win the 2027 Abia governorship election.
The SWC also raised concerns over the alleged conduct of Hon. Chris Nkwonta, whom the committee claimed publicly stated, in the presence of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, that he would vote for Governor Otti in the forthcoming election.
The Abia APC described the alleged remarks as particularly troubling because both Kalu and Nkwonta are regarded as prominent members and leaders within the party.
The committee characterised the alleged actions as “internal sabotage and anti-party conduct,” arguing that such behaviour could weaken the APC’s electoral structures and discourage members working towards the party’s objectives.
The SWC further stressed that membership of the APC comes with an obligation to respect the party’s Constitution, rules and regulations. It maintained that no member, irrespective of political influence, position, status or previous contributions, is above the party’s governing rules.
The committee consequently stated that the alleged conduct of the two politicians amounted to anti-party activities and could constitute a breach of Article 21.2 (11) of the APC Constitution, 2022, which provides for disciplinary measures in cases involving conduct considered inimical to the party or acts of indiscipline and disloyalty.
The Abia APC SWC therefore called on Senator Kalu and Hon. Nkwonta to tender an unreserved public apology to the party, its leadership, members and supporters across the state.
According to the communiqué, the requested apology is expected to demonstrate their commitment to the APC, its Constitution, leadership and collective decisions, particularly concerning the party’s candidates for the 2027 general elections.
The party warned that failure by either individual to comply with the demand within the stipulated period could result in the establishment of a disciplinary committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding their respective statements and actions.
The committee said such a panel would make appropriate recommendations to the relevant organs of the party and, where liability is established, disciplinary measures provided under the APC Constitution and other applicable regulations could be imposed.
The SWC emphasised that any disciplinary action would be taken “without fear or favour,” regardless of the political standing or influence of the individuals involved.
The committee also resolved that the APC could withdraw political support and privileges from either politician if their alleged conduct is eventually established to be detrimental to the party’s interests ahead of the 2027 elections.
Reaffirming its commitment to the party’s electoral ambitions, the Abia APC said it would continue efforts to strengthen its structures, support its candidates and pursue victory in the 2027 governorship election, as well as the various federal and state legislative contests in the state.
The party urged its members and supporters to remain calm, disciplined and united, assuring them that it would continue to use legitimate political and organisational mechanisms to protect its integrity and advance its interests.
The communiqué further emphasised that the APC is bigger than any individual and that political leadership comes with responsibility. According to the party, members entrusted with leadership positions are expected to uphold the party’s values, protect its interests and respect decisions reached through its established structures.
The communiqué was unanimously adopted and signed by 17 members of the Abia State Working Committee who were present at the meeting.
