By Mark Chukwu, Umuahia
The Abia State Government has announced plans to commence a fresh round of project commissioning and groundbreaking ceremonies following the successful conclusion of activities marking the administration’s third anniversary.
According to the government, several key projects that could not be accommodated during the week-long anniversary celebrations will now be commissioned or flagged off in the coming days as Governor Alex Otti continues his infrastructure and development drive across the state.
Speaking to journalists after the State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House, Umuahia, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed that the third-anniversary celebrations provided an opportunity for the administration to assess its achievements since assuming office in 2023.
He noted that the review covered major sectors including infrastructure, education, healthcare, power, economic reforms, and other critical areas that have witnessed significant government intervention over the past three years.
Prince Kanu revealed that the state government is set to embark on major tourism development initiatives aimed at preserving historical landmarks, boosting tourism, and enhancing Abia’s cultural heritage assets.
Among the projects lined up for renovation and retrofitting are the Ojukwu Bunker in Umuahia and the National War Museum, both of which are considered important historical and tourist attractions in Nigeria. The planned upgrades are expected to improve visitor experience, preserve historical artifacts, and position the sites as key destinations for local and international tourists.
The commissioner explained that the tourism development strategy aligns with Governor Otti’s broader vision of diversifying the state’s economy, creating employment opportunities, and attracting investment through tourism and cultural promotion.
He further stated that the government remains committed to completing ongoing projects while initiating new ones that will have direct economic and social benefits for residents.
The planned projects are expected to complement the administration’s ongoing efforts to modernize public infrastructure, stimulate economic growth, and strengthen Abia’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s emerging investment and tourism destinations.
