Abia Unveils Ambitious Urban Vision with Federal Housing Estate Groundbreaking

From Mark Chukwu , Umuahia

Abia State is set to take a significant step toward modern urban development as the state government, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Housing, prepares to officially launch the construction of a new Federal Housing Estate in Umuahia. The groundbreaking ceremony represents a key milestone in ongoing efforts to expand affordable housing and drive sustainable growth across the state.

The housing project, strategically located along the Ubani–Uzuakoli Road in Umuahia North, is designed to improve access to quality housing while enhancing living standards for residents. It is also expected to stimulate economic activity and support long-term community development.

Scheduled for Tuesday, April 21, 2026, the event is anticipated to draw government officials, development partners, traditional rulers, and members of the public, highlighting its importance within Abia’s broader infrastructure and housing agenda.

Beyond residential development, the state government is advancing plans for comprehensive urban transformation. Speaking after a State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, revealed that discussions with the Nigerian Railway Corporation have progressed toward establishing a new railway station in Umuahia.

The proposed station will be positioned near the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal and is expected to form part of an integrated urban transport system. Plans include a rail corridor complemented by commercial and retail hubs, alongside new access roads to improve connectivity within the city.

Efforts to decongest key commercial areas are also underway. The government has outlined plans to relocate traders from the busy Isi Gate axis to the newly developed Relief Market in Afara.

Compensation has reportedly been paid to affected landowners, while key infrastructure such as perimeter fencing and retaining walls is nearing completion. In the interim, some traders will be temporarily moved to Okigwe Park.

Additionally, commercial transport operators currently using Okigwe Park will transition to the soon-to-be-completed Umuahia Central Bus Terminal. The facility is expected to play a central role in the Abia Green Shuttle Bus Service Scheme, with supporting infrastructure including charging stations, ticketing systems, and bus shelters already in place.

Officials say the transport initiative will significantly improve mobility and position Umuahia among Nigeria’s cities with modern public transit systems once fully operational.

In other developments, the Greater Ohafia Development Authority has completed several projects awaiting commissioning. These include major road networks and the Afiankwo Isiama Daily Market, both expected to enhance trade and economic activity in the region.

Reaffirming the importance of the housing estate project, government representatives noted that it is a collaborative effort between federal and state authorities. The state government’s role includes providing land and facilitating smooth execution.

Authorities have dismissed opposing claims surrounding the project as distractions, emphasizing that the focus remains on delivering impactful initiatives that benefit residents.
