Abia 2027: Aguocha Backs Otti’s Re-Election, Defends Right of Aspirants, Speaks on Nnamdi Kanu

A prominent lawmaker representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency Hon. Obi Aguocha has reaffirmed strong support for Governor Alex Otti, declaring that there is currently “no vacancy” in Abia State’s top political seat ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking on the political future of the state, the lawmaker acknowledged that Benjamin Kalu, who represents a neighboring constituency, has every constitutional right to pursue any political ambition, including a potential governorship bid. However, he emphasized that while aspirations are legitimate in a democratic system, his position differs on the necessity of contesting the governorship at this time.

According to him, Governor Otti has established a strong bond with the people of Abia State through visible development and impactful governance. He noted that residents across the state can directly feel and see the progress being made, which strengthens the case for continuity in leadership.

He further pointed to the massive reception organized recently by constituents in Umuahia North, Umuahia South, and Ikwuano as a clear endorsement of the governor’s performance. The event, he said, symbolized public approval and a collective commitment to support Otti’s re-election bid.

While addressing criticisms from potential challengers, the lawmaker remarked that it is common for political opponents to highlight perceived shortcomings, regardless of performance. He likened such criticism to personal rivalry, where individuals often focus on flaws to justify their ambitions. Nonetheless, he maintained that the ultimate decision rests with the electorate, stressing that democracy allows voters to choose their preferred candidate.

On national issues, the lawmaker also spoke passionately about his advocacy for Nnamdi Kanu, whom he described as both a constituent and someone with deep personal ties. He reiterated his commitment to speaking on Kanu’s behalf, citing concerns about fairness and justice within Nigeria’s legal framework.

He argued that there appears to be inconsistency in the administration of justice across different regions, a situation he believes should be addressed. Drawing comparisons with other high-profile cases, he questioned why similar approaches have not been applied universally.

The lawmaker revealed that advocating for Kanu has come at a personal and political cost, including being labeled for his stance on constitutional and justice-related issues. Despite this, he expressed no regret, insisting that leadership requires courage to speak up when others remain silent.

He also commended Governor Otti for stepping into the conversation by engaging fellow leaders in the Southeast to push for a political resolution. According to him, such collaboration could help bring the matter to the attention of the presidency and open the door for dialogue.
