BREAKING: ASUU-ABSU Suspends Strike, Directs Members to Resume Academic Duties

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Abia State University (ABSU) branch, has suspended its ongoing industrial action and directed members to immediately return to their academic responsibilities.

The directive takes effect from Friday, August 28, 2026, following a congress meeting where members reviewed recent developments surrounding the issues that led to the strike.

The decision provides temporary relief for students and other members of the university community who have been affected by the industrial action.

According to a statement jointly signed by the ASUU-ABSU Branch Chairperson, Dr. Chidi S. Mba, and the Branch Secretary, Dr. Victor U. Obisike, the union remains concerned about the continued suspension of Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze.

The union’s congress subsequently gave the university management a deadline of Friday, September 4, 2026, to recall Professor Nwaeze and formally lift his suspension.

ASUU-ABSU warned that failure by the university authorities to meet the demand within the stipulated period could trigger a fresh industrial action.

“We are giving the university management up to Friday, September 4, 2026, to recall Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze and lift his suspension,” the union stated.

The branch further stressed the importance of unity among its members as efforts continue to resolve the outstanding issues affecting academic staff at the institution.

The union commended its members for their resilience, commitment and support throughout the period of the strike, noting that their collective resolve had contributed significantly to the progress made so far.

ASUU-ABSU also clarified its communication structure, reminding members that the Branch Chairperson remains the only official spokesperson authorised to speak on behalf of the branch.

Members who require further clarification on the development were advised to contact the branch chairperson directly.

For now, the suspension of the strike means academic activities at Abia State University are expected to resume, although the union has made it clear that the development is conditional on the university management resolving the issue surrounding Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze by the September 4 deadline.
