Former Vice-President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has approached the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking the disqualification of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from the 2027 presidential election over an alleged forged National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate.
Atiku, alongside the ADC, is asking the court to determine whether President Tinubu presented a forged NYSC certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in connection with the 2023 and 2027 presidential elections.
The suit, which also names the All Progressives Congress (APC) and INEC as defendants, is anchored on Section 137(1)(j) of the 1999 Constitution. The provision addresses the eligibility of a presidential candidate who presents a forged certificate to INEC.
The plaintiffs are also seeking an order compelling INEC to release President Tinubu’s Form CF001 submitted for the 2023 and 2027 presidential elections. The form contains information and documents submitted by candidates as part of the electoral process.
Atiku personally visited the Federal High Court registry in Abuja on Friday, where he swore to an affidavit supporting the suit.
The legal action comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 presidential election continue to intensify, with questions surrounding candidates’ qualifications and electoral documents increasingly becoming subjects of legal and political debate.
However, the allegations contained in Atiku’s suit have not been established as facts and remain subject to judicial determination. The case is currently at the filing stage, and the court is expected to consider the issues raised by the plaintiffs in due course.
