DSS Denies Arresting or Detaining Prof. Okey Ndibe at Lagos Airport
DSS denies arresting or detaining Prof. Okey Ndibe at Lagos airport, clarifying reports surrounding the author’s alleged detention.
The Department of State Services (DSS) has dismissed reports alleging that renowned Nigerian author and columnist, Prof. Okey Ndibe, was arrested or detained by its operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, on June 1, 2026.
In a statement issued to clarify the situation, the DSS stated that it neither arrested nor detained Prof. Ndibe at the airport or at any other location on the said date. The agency emphasized that claims linking it to the alleged detention were inaccurate and should be disregarded.
The clarification comes amid widespread reports that Prof. Ndibe had been held by security officials upon his arrival at the Lagos airport. Earlier reports indicated that the respected academic and public affairs commentator had confirmed regaining his freedom after what was described as a period of detention.
However, the DSS maintained that it had no involvement in any such action against the professor, stressing the need for accurate information in matters concerning national security agencies.
The development has generated public interest, with many Nigerians seeking clarity over the circumstances surrounding the incident. While the DSS has officially distanced itself from the reported detention, questions remain regarding the identity of the officials involved and the events that led to the situation.
Prof. Ndibe, a respected literary figure and columnist known for his commentary on national issues, has yet to provide further details following the DSS clarification.
