The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, to facilitate major runway rehabilitation works aimed at improving aviation safety and operational efficiency.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed the development in a statement, explaining that the project is necessary to address the deteriorating condition of sections of the runway and prepare the airport for increased passenger traffic during the Christmas travel season.
According to the statement, the rehabilitation project is being undertaken through a joint partnership between the Federal Government and the Imo State Government.
The planned works will include repairing damaged portions of the runway, treating surface cracks, filling potholes and resurfacing the affected areas. The project will also involve runway extension works designed to accommodate larger aircraft and improve the airport’s operational capacity.
Keyamo stated that he had earlier held discussions with Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, who, alongside other key stakeholders in the South-East, acknowledged the need for the temporary closure to ensure that the rehabilitation could be carried out effectively.
The airport is scheduled to close from October 20, 2026, for approximately 25 days. The temporary shutdown is expected to allow contractors to carry out the necessary repairs and improvements without compromising aviation safety.
The rehabilitation is particularly significant for travellers in Imo State and neighbouring South-Eastern states, where the Owerri airport serves as an important gateway for business, tourism and family visits.
With the Christmas travel period approaching, the authorities have advised passengers scheduled to fly through the airport during the closure to contact their respective airlines for updated information on flight cancellations, rescheduling and alternative travel arrangements.
Passengers are also encouraged to confirm their flight status before travelling to the airport to avoid unnecessary delays or disruptions.
The Federal Government and the Imo State Government are expected to use the rehabilitation project to improve the airport’s infrastructure, strengthen safety standards and enhance its capacity to serve travellers and airlines.
The temporary closure means passengers will need to make alternative arrangements during the rehabilitation period. Travellers are therefore advised to stay informed through official announcements from the relevant aviation authorities and their airlines.
The planned 25-day closure is expected to run from October 20, 2026, subject to any official updates regarding the rehabilitation schedule.
