First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Donates N2 Billion to Boost Akwete Fabric Industry, Receives Prestigious Abia Traditional Title
Abia State played host to the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, during a landmark visit that celebrated the rich cultural heritage of the state while strengthening efforts to empower women and promote indigenous industries.
Governor Alex Otti, accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, alongside former Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah, received the First Lady as she visited the historic Akwete community to interact with the renowned women weavers responsible for producing the globally admired Akwete fabric.
The visit highlighted the Federal Government’s commitment to preserving Nigeria’s cultural identity through investments in local industries that have the potential to create jobs, empower women, and contribute to sustainable economic growth.
In a major boost for the state’s textile industry, Senator Oluremi Tinubu announced a ₦2 billion intervention to support the growth and modernization of the Akwete weaving industry. The funding will be used to improve the Akwete production hub, strengthen the capacity of local artisans, expand production, and enhance the global competitiveness of the iconic handwoven fabric.
Speaking during the event in Aba, the First Lady said the initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to promote women-led enterprises, preserve Nigeria’s cultural heritage, and unlock the economic potential of indigenous industries. She noted that empowering local craftsmen and women remains essential to achieving inclusive national development.
The donation is expected to create new employment opportunities, improve the livelihoods of Akwete weavers, and attract greater local and international interest in one of Nigeria’s oldest and most celebrated textile traditions.
In recognition of her contributions to women’s empowerment, cultural preservation, and national development, the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers conferred on Senator Oluremi Tinubu the prestigious traditional title of “Ugo Nwanyi Abia,” meaning “The Pride of Abia Women.”
The honour reflects the appreciation of the people of Abia for her support of initiatives that promote women’s advancement, preserve cultural heritage, and strengthen community development.
