First Lady Oluremi Tinubu to Visit Abia, Celebrate Akwete Weaving Heritage with Governor Alex Otti
The Abia State Government has announced that Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, will embark on an official visit to the state on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, where she will join Governor Alex Chioma Otti and the First Lady of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, in celebrating the internationally acclaimed Akwete weaving heritage.
According to a press release issued by the Abia State Government, the visit will focus on promoting the state’s rich cultural heritage and recognizing the exceptional craftsmanship of the Akwete people, whose handwoven textiles have earned global recognition over the years.
As part of her itinerary, Senator Oluremi Tinubu will tour the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Society in Akwete, located in Ukwa East Local Government Area. During the visit, she is expected to interact with master weavers, observe the traditional weaving process firsthand, and appreciate the cultural significance of the famous Akwete fabric, regarded as one of Nigeria’s most treasured indigenous textile traditions.
The visit is expected to further highlight the importance of preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage while promoting local industries, women empowerment, tourism, and economic development through traditional crafts.
Following the inspection of the weaving cooperative, the First Lady, alongside Governor Alex Otti and Mrs. Priscilla Otti, will proceed to the Akwete Central School Field, where a grand civic reception has been organized in her honour.
The event is scheduled to commence at 10:00 a.m. and is expected to attract top government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, women and youth organizations, stakeholders, and residents from across Abia State. The gathering will serve as an opportunity to celebrate the historic visit and showcase the unique cultural identity of the Akwete community.
The Abia State Government has called on residents, particularly those in Ukwa East Local Government Area and neighbouring communities, to come out in large numbers to give the First Lady a warm reception and participate in the celebration of one of the state’s most iconic cultural symbols.
