Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved the dismissal of the driver and conductor attached to Bus 8 of the Abia Green Shuttle scheme following allegations of fare diversion and misconduct.
The action comes after a viral video surfaced on social media, allegedly showing the two officials collecting cash directly from passengers instead of using the government’s approved electronic card payment system. According to the allegations, the cash collected from commuters was diverted for personal use rather than being remitted through the official payment platform.
Governor Otti confirmed the development during the July edition of the monthly interactive media programme, “Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians,” held at the Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia.
Speaking on the incident, the Governor said the dismissal reflects his administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and prudent management of public resources. He stressed that acts of corruption and misconduct would not be tolerated in any government programme or institution.
Responding to concerns raised by commuters about overcrowding and operations of the Abia Green Shuttle buses, Governor Otti disclosed that the state government has installed electronic surveillance cameras across the transport fleet. The monitoring system is designed to track the activities of drivers, conductors, and passengers while enhancing service delivery and preventing revenue leakages.
According to the Governor, the surveillance technology will improve oversight, ensure compliance with operational guidelines, and help identify any form of misconduct within the state’s mass transit system.
He assured residents that the government remains committed to expanding the Abia Green Shuttle programme while maintaining high standards of accountability, efficiency, and transparency. The Governor added that the electronic monitoring system would play a vital role in preventing similar incidents as the state’s public transportation network continues to grow.
