Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has reaffirmed that sustainable development not just economic growth remains the guiding principle behind his administration’s policies, as he welcomed 2024 Nobel Laureate in Economics, Professor James A. Robinson, to the Government House in Umuahia.
Professor Robinson, a globally recognised development economist from the University of Chicago, led a delegation of distinguished scholars from leading American universities on a courtesy visit to the Governor on Monday, July 27, 2026. The team was accompanied by Nigeria’s former Minister of Education and Health, Professor Ihechukwu Madubuike.
Welcoming the delegation, Governor Otti congratulated Professor Robinson on receiving the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics, describing the award as a fitting recognition of his outstanding contributions to development economics. He noted that although he had long admired Robinson’s academic work, the visit provided the opportunity for a personal meeting.
The Governor explained that development economics remains one of the most significant branches of the discipline because it focuses on improving people’s quality of life rather than simply recording economic expansion.
According to him, economic growth figures alone cannot accurately measure a society’s progress if they fail to improve living conditions. He observed that a country may record positive Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth, but if population growth outpaces economic expansion, the overall standard of living could still decline.
Governor Otti stressed that his administration deliberately prioritises policies that reduce poverty, create employment opportunities, improve productivity, and strengthen long-term development instead of pursuing growth statistics without meaningful impact on citizens.
He explained that poverty, unemployment, and low productivity often reinforce one another, creating a cycle that must be broken through deliberate policy interventions. For this reason, the Abia State Government focuses on identifying the root causes of economic challenges and implementing practical solutions that deliver lasting results.
The Governor further stated that creating an enabling environment for businesses and investors must be matched with investments in human capital so that citizens possess the skills and capacity needed to benefit from emerging economic opportunities. He noted that injecting capital into an economy without developing the people who will utilise it often produces limited results.
Governor Otti also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to continuous learning and knowledge exchange, expressing the readiness of the Abia State Government to collaborate with Professor Robinson on research, public policy development, and other academic partnerships.
Speaking during the visit, Professor James Robinson expressed delight at being in Abia State and said he looked forward to engaging in discussions on Nigeria’s development challenges, institutional reforms, and Governor Otti’s approach to governance.
Also addressing the gathering, Professor Leander Heldring of Northwestern University observed that the prosperity of nations largely depends on the quality of their institutions and the decisions made by their people. He commended the reforms being implemented in Abia State, describing them as impressive examples of development-focused leadership.
Professor Chima Korie of Marquette University also praised the Governor’s achievements, noting that the progress recorded in Abia State demonstrates what effective governance can accomplish. He added that many Nigerians in the diaspora are encouraged by the transformation taking place in the state and expressed hope that other states would adopt similar development strategies.
Leader of the delegation, Professor Ihechukwu Madubuike, explained that the visit was designed to strengthen collaboration between Abia State and the global academic community through research partnerships, policy advisory support, capacity building, and institutional development.
He described Governor Otti’s emphasis on fiscal discipline, transparency, productivity, and prudent management of public resources as consistent with the principles championed by Professor Robinson throughout his academic career.
President of the Abia State Leadership Academy (ASLA) and former Secretary to the State Government, Professor Kenneth Kalu, revealed that Professor Robinson’s scholarly works had significantly influenced his academic journey over the years.
He also highlighted the establishment of the Abia State Leadership Academy by Governor Otti through an Executive Order, explaining that the institution is dedicated to nurturing ethical, visionary, and institution-focused leaders capable of driving sustainable development in Abia State and Nigeria.
The meeting was attended by the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, PhD, alongside other members of the Abia State Executive Council.
