Hon. Obi Aguocha Leads Opposition to Bill Seeking to Remove INEC’s Powers Over Political Parties

Hon. Obi Aguocha, the lawmaker representing Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has emerged as a leading voice in defence of Nigeria’s democratic institutions after opposing a controversial bill aimed at altering the constitutional powers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

During plenary, Aguocha strongly rejected the proposed legislation, which sought to transfer INEC’s constitutional responsibility for registering and regulating political parties to a proposed Office of the Registrar-General of Political Parties.

In his submission before fellow lawmakers, the federal legislator argued that removing these powers from INEC could weaken Nigeria’s democratic framework and create serious constitutional concerns. He maintained that vesting such authority in a new office, which is yet to be established, could expose the electoral process to undue political influence, particularly if the office becomes subject to executive control or the interests of the ruling party.

Aguocha warned that such a move could have far-reaching implications for the country’s democracy, especially with preparations for the 2027 general elections already drawing national attention. According to him, maintaining the independence of electoral institutions is essential to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections.

The lawmaker also expressed concern that allowing both INEC and a separate Registrar-General of Political Parties to operate simultaneously would create overlapping responsibilities, regulatory conflicts, and uncertainty within Nigeria’s electoral system. He noted that such duplication could erode public confidence in election administration and weaken trust in democratic processes.

His arguments reportedly gained significant support on the floor of the House, with several lawmakers rejecting the consolidated Bills 1 to 7. The decision effectively stalled the proposed legislation, reinforcing the National Assembly’s constitutional responsibility to safeguard democratic institutions and preserve the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.

Political observers say the development underscores the importance of continued legislative scrutiny of electoral reforms, particularly those capable of reshaping the nation’s democratic landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
