LEEX 2026: Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic Rector Emerges Education Administrator of the Year

The Rector of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, Engr. Dr. Christopher Okoro Kalu, has emerged as the 2026 Education Administrator of the Year at the 8th Leadership Excellence Awards (LEEX 2026).

Okoro was declared the winner following a nationwide public voting exercise and the final ratification of the LEEX Awards Selection Committee on August 10, 2026. The decision was contained in an official notification issued by the award’s Local Organising Committee on August 13.

The Rector secured an impressive 148,267 votes in the nationwide poll, which was independently monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). According to the organisers, the final voting figures for the various nominees were published through the official LEEX voting portal.

The award committee said Okoro’s victory reflected the strong public confidence in his leadership and the reforms implemented at Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic.

Among the major achievements cited by the organisers was the clearance of 36 months of outstanding salary arrears owed to staff, a development they said helped restore stability across the institution’s academic and administrative operations.

The committee also highlighted the Polytechnic’s achievement of full accreditation for its 33 academic programmes, including digital accreditation, following previous challenges in meeting accreditation requirements.

Another factor considered was the institution’s record student enrolment, which the organisers described as the highest in more than a decade.

Beyond administrative reforms, Okoro’s leadership has also focused on technology-driven education. The LEEX organisers specifically recognised the establishment of a Department of Artificial Intelligence, which they described as the first of its kind in a Nigerian polytechnic.

The Rector’s administration has also introduced online certification for graduates, expanded technology-oriented academic programmes and strengthened academic, infrastructural and student-centred initiatives across the institution.

The recognition comes as Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic continues to undertake infrastructural development and institutional reforms, including ongoing projects at its Osisioma Campus and efforts to broaden technology-focused educational opportunities for students.

Okoro’s latest honour adds to a growing list of recognitions associated with his leadership of the state-owned polytechnic. In 2025, he received the Game Changer Award from Flow 94.9 FM, Umuahia, for his contributions to the transformation of Abia State, particularly in education, infrastructure and human capital development.

At LEEX 2026, Okoro emerged ahead of other prominent nominees in the category. The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), was named first runner-up, while the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, emerged second runner-up.

The LEEX Awards Selection Committee said the final result followed the completion of the nationwide voting process and the committee’s subsequent ratification.
