BREAKING: National Assembly Moves to Draft Bill on Medicinal Cannabis Legalisation

The Nigerian National Assembly is reportedly working on a legislative proposal aimed at legalising cannabis for medicinal and economic purposes, a move that could spark nationwide debate on drug policy reform and investment opportunities.

According to emerging reports, lawmakers are considering a bill that would establish a regulated framework for the cultivation, processing, and use of cannabis strictly for medical and industrial applications. The proposed legislation is expected to focus on creating economic value while maintaining measures against recreational abuse.

Supporters of the initiative believe Nigeria could benefit significantly from the global medicinal cannabis market, which has generated billions of dollars in revenue across several countries.

Advocates argue that a regulated cannabis industry could attract foreign investment, create employment opportunities, boost agricultural exports, and increase government revenue.

The proposal is also expected to highlight the medicinal value of cannabis-derived products, particularly in the treatment of certain medical conditions where approved pharmaceutical cannabis is used internationally under strict regulations.

Despite the economic arguments, the development is likely to generate mixed reactions among Nigerians due to existing concerns over drug abuse and public health. Analysts say lawmakers may face pressure to balance economic interests with social and security implications before any final approval is granted.

Nigeria currently maintains strict anti-drug laws under the supervision of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), which continues to combat illegal cultivation and trafficking of cannabis, commonly referred to locally as “Indian hemp.”

If eventually passed into law, the proposed bill could mark a significant shift in Nigeria’s approach to cannabis regulation and open discussions on the future of medicinal cannabis in Africa’s largest economy.
