Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the death of the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Aminu Yusuf Talban Wushishi.
Wushishi reportedly died on Friday, August 28, 2026, after a brief illness. News of his passing reached Minna, the Niger State capital, around the time of the Juma’at prayer, sparking grief among his associates, political allies and members of the community.
His death was confirmed by his Special Adviser on Media, Stanley Nwosu, who stated that the NPC chairman had been ill for a short period before his death.
Wushishi was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and officially assumed office as Chairman of the National Population Commission on December 2, 2025. The NPC had described him as an experienced public servant with a background spanning education, governance, politics and community development.
Before his appointment to head the NPC, Wushishi held several public and political positions. He served as Executive Chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area, was a member-elect of the Niger State House of Assembly and served on the board of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). He also served as Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Niger State Governor and was involved in grassroots mobilisation.
As chairman of the NPC, Wushishi led an institution responsible for generating and managing critical demographic information used in national planning, policy development, population management and census-related activities.
His death comes less than a year after he assumed leadership of the commission, leaving many associates and political figures in Niger State mourning. Tributes have also begun to emerge, with his death being described as a significant loss to his family, Niger State and Nigeria.
Details concerning the circumstances surrounding his illness and funeral arrangements were not immediately available at the time of filing this report.
