Abia Reaffirms Commitment to Quality Healthcare as Obingwa General Hospital Nears Completion
The Abia State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare services to residents as the comprehensive renovation and upgrade of the General Hospital, Mgboko, in Obingwa Local Government Area, approaches completion.
The assurance was given by the Abia State Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Uche, during a pre-completion inspection of the facility. He explained that the visit was aimed at assessing the level of work completed and ensuring that the project aligns with Governor Alex Otti’s vision of transforming healthcare infrastructure across the state.
According to the commissioner, the Obingwa General Hospital is among several government-owned health facilities undergoing extensive rehabilitation to improve healthcare delivery and expand access to specialist medical services for residents.
Professor Uche expressed satisfaction with the pace of work, noting that the project is nearing completion. He disclosed that the installation of modern medical equipment has already commenced, with several critical devices delivered to the facility in preparation for its commissioning.
He stated that once operational, the hospital will serve as a major referral centre for primary healthcare facilities across Obingwa and neighbouring communities, including parts of Aba. The upgraded hospital is expected to handle complicated pregnancies, emergency cases, surgeries, childhood illnesses, and other medical conditions that cannot be effectively managed at the primary healthcare level.
The commissioner highlighted that the facility has been transformed into a modern healthcare centre equipped with a surgical theatre, dental clinic, eye clinic, standard laboratory, radiology and ultrasound units, delivery suites, male and female wards, children’s wards, nutrition clinic, accident and emergency unit, ambulance services, and amenity wards designed to provide enhanced comfort for patients.
Beyond medical services, the upgraded hospital also features residential accommodation for doctors and nurses, a reliable water supply system, and stable electricity infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted healthcare delivery.
The renovation forms part of the Abia State Government’s broader healthcare reform agenda aimed at modernising public hospitals, strengthening referral services, improving patient outcomes, and making quality healthcare more accessible to people across the state.
