BREAKING: Oyo and Kebbi States Declare June 16 Public Holiday

Oyo and Kebbi states have declared June 16, 2026, a public holiday to celebrate Hijrah 1448AH, the Islamic New Year.

The governments of Oyo and Kebbi states have declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate the beginning of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.

The announcement was made as part of efforts to enable Muslims across both states to celebrate the historic occasion and reflect on the values associated with the Islamic calendar.

In Oyo State, the government declared Tuesday a work-free day for public servants and residents to observe the commencement of Hijrah 1448AH. The state administration encouraged citizens to use the period to pray for peace, unity, and sustainable development in the state and across Nigeria.

Similarly, the Kebbi State Government also announced a public holiday in honour of the Islamic New Year. Authorities urged residents to embrace the teachings of Islam by promoting tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and mutual understanding among different religious and ethnic groups.

Hijrah, also known as the Islamic New Year, marks the migration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 AD, an event that signifies the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar.

Government officials in both states called on residents to remain law-abiding and use the occasion to strengthen bonds of brotherhood while praying for national progress and prosperity.

The declaration of the public holiday means government offices, schools, and some public institutions may suspend official activities for the day, while essential services are expected to continue operations.
