Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Thursday visited the University of the Niger as part of his continued commitment to promoting education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation across Nigeria.
During the visit, Obi praised the rapid development of the university, which was established just five years ago, noting that the institution has continued to record remarkable progress within a short period.
He revealed that he makes it a priority to visit the university annually in support of its educational mission, recalling that his previous visit was to the institution’s teaching hospital in Ogidi.
Addressing students during the event, Obi encouraged them to remain focused and dedicated to their studies, emphasizing that knowledge remains the driving force of global development. According to him, the future of Nigeria depends largely on the younger generation and their ability to acquire quality education and skills.
In further demonstration of his support for educational advancement, the former presidential candidate donated ₦25 million towards scholarship support and the continued development of the institution.
Obi also commended the Diocese on the Niger for its vision and dedication to educational growth and institution building. He further applauded the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, for his unwavering commitment to education and human capital development, describing his efforts as impactful and inspiring.
Reaffirming his passion for education, Obi stated that no nation can rise above the quality of its education system and human capital. He stressed the importance of sustained investment in students and academic institutions as a pathway to national development.
