In the lead-up to the 2027 general elections, Rt. Hon. Austin Okezie Meregini, the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, has once again emphasized the importance of equity, justice, and fairness in the political representation of the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency.
Meregini shared his thoughts on Friday, September 25, 2026, during the vibrant Iri Ji Okwuta Isieke Ibeku celebration. He joined local community members, traditional leaders, and fellow political figures in this annual cultural event, which serves as a wonderful opportunity for people to come together and celebrate their rich heritage.
Among the attendees was Hon. Obi Aguocha, who represents the Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. The gathering not only a celebrated culture but also fostered a sense of unity and togetherness among the participants.
During his address to youth leaders and other community stakeholders, Meregini urged a shift in the narrative regarding the relationship between Ibeku and Ohuhu, emphasizing that both communities are like brothers within the Umuahia North Local Government Area.
He pointed out that past political disagreements shouldn’t lead to enduring divisions among the people. Instead, he called for a spirit of understanding, unity, and fairness in how political representation is distributed.
Meregini also delved into the political history of Umuahia North and the broader Ikwuano/Umuahia constituency. He referenced the political journeys of former Abia State Governor and Senator, His Excellency Chief Dr. Theodore Ahamefule Orji, along with his son, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji, to bolster his argument for equitable political representation having served as Chief of Staff to the then Governor of Abia state, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu for Eight years, Governor for eight years, Senate for another eight years and his son as the leader of the house who later became the speaker in the past administration.
He noted that the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency comprises three local government areas, Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South, and stressed that political representation should reflect the diverse interests and aspirations of the various communities within the constituency.
He particularly pointed out what he sees as a lack of representation for an Ohuhu candidate in the Federal Constituency seat, emphasizing the need to honor the principle of rotation. Meregini then called on stakeholders to back Hon. Obi Aguocha, arguing that Aguocha deserves the chance to finish what he referred to as an eight-year term of representation for Ohuhu.
Aguocha had previously triumphed over Chinedum Orji in the 2023 House of Representatives election for the constituency. Although Orji contested the result at the election tribunal, his petition was dismissed, and Aguocha’s victory was upheld. Meregini’s remarks come as the 2027 elections approach, with political figures in Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South increasingly engaging in discussions about zoning, rotation, continuity, and representation.
The Deputy Speaker also criticized what he termed clannish politics, urging political and community leaders to prioritize the overall interests of the constituency over narrow sectional concerns. He stressed that fostering equity, justice, and fairness would enhance unity among the people and help maintain harmonious relationships between Ibeku, Ohuhu, and other communities in the constituency.
The Deputy speaker applauded Rt. Hon. Obi Aguocha for being the only Igbo legislator who never gets tired of speaking for the freedom of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who is his constituent, also voicing against the marginalisation of the Igbo nation without considering the denials that comes due to his strong advocacy against the abnormalities in the system.

The Iri Ji Okwuta Isieke Ibeku celebration thus blended cultural festivities with discussions about unity, political representation, and the future of the constituency as stakeholders set their sights on the upcoming 2027 electoral cycle.
