The Supreme Court of Nigeria has directed legal practitioners to discontinue the use of the title “Barrister” in official court correspondence and filings, emphasizing that lawyers should instead use only their names and other professionally recognized designations where necessary.
The directive forms part of the apex court’s effort to standardize legal practice and improve the format of official documents submitted before the court. According to the court, legal practitioners are expected to avoid the use of honorary or descriptive titles that are not required for official judicial correspondence.
The development means that letters, applications, court processes and other formal communications addressed to or filed before the Supreme Court should no longer carry the title “Barrister” before a lawyer’s name. Instead, practitioners are expected to identify themselves by their names, while recognized professional qualifications may be used only where permitted by the applicable rules and practice directions.
The decision has generated widespread reactions within Nigeria’s legal community, with many lawyers describing it as a move aimed at promoting uniformity, professionalism and the dignity of judicial proceedings.
