President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated four individuals for appointment as National Commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alongside two nominees for the position of Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).
The nominations cover several geopolitical zones and include both new appointments and a reappointment, as well as changes involving existing electoral officials.
Tinubu’s Four INEC National Commissioner Nominees
The four nominees for the position of National Commissioner are Professor Mustapha Aliu, Bashir Muhammed Umar, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola and Dr. Bala Bila.
Professor Mustapha Aliu, representing the North-West geopolitical zone, has been nominated to replace Professor Abdullahi Zuru. Bashir Muhammed Umar, from the North-Central zone, is expected to replace Professor Muhammad Adamu.
Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, who currently serves as a Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State, has been nominated to replace Professor Cornelius Ajayi. Her nomination would see her move from her current role to the national commission, subject to the completion of the appointment process.
Meanwhile, Dr. Bala Bila from the North-East geopolitical zone has been reappointed as a National Commissioner.
These nominations are expected to shape the composition of INEC’s national leadership as the electoral body continues its responsibility of overseeing elections and managing electoral processes across Nigeria.
Two Resident Electoral Commissioners Also Nominated
In addition to the national-level appointments, President Tinubu has nominated two individuals for the position of Resident Electoral Commissioner.
Dr. Samuel Akinjide Akinleye has been nominated as Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ekiti State, while Zahradden Basiru Sanusi has been nominated for Jigawa State.
Sanusi’s nomination is expected to fill the position currently occupied by Professor Saidu Ahmed Babura.
Resident Electoral Commissioners serve as INEC’s representatives in their respective states and play important roles in coordinating electoral activities, implementing the commission’s policies and supervising preparations for elections at the state level.
INEC’s Role in Nigeria’s Electoral Process
The Independent National Electoral Commission is responsible for organising, conducting and supervising elections in Nigeria. Its leadership structure includes National Commissioners, who contribute to policy direction and decision-making, and Resident Electoral Commissioners, who oversee the commission’s operations in individual states.
The latest nominations involve appointments across the North-West, North-Central, South-West and North-East geopolitical zones, as well as changes to the commission’s state-level representation in Ekiti and Jigawa.
The nominees’ appointments and the applicable confirmation or approval procedures will determine when they formally assume their respective positions.
