Trailer Hits FMC Umuahia Fence, Causes Gridlock

A heavy-duty trailer transporting iron rods crashed into the perimeter fence of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, in the early hours of Thursday after reportedly developing a mechanical fault while ascending a hill along the Ikot Ekpene Express Road.

The incident, which occurred near Finnbars Road and close to the Abia State High Court, caused significant disruption to traffic movement and left commuters stranded in a prolonged gridlock during the morning rush hour.

According to the trailer driver, who spoke with local reporters, the accident happened at approximately 2:00 a.m. He explained that the truck suddenly lost compression while climbing the steep section of the road, making it impossible to maintain forward movement. The vehicle subsequently rolled backwards uncontrollably before crashing into the fence of the Federal Medical Centre.

The impact caused damage to a section of the hospital’s perimeter fence, while the trailer came to a halt partially blocking the roadway. As residents and commuters began their daily activities, the obstruction quickly resulted in severe traffic congestion along the busy expressway.

Motorists travelling through the area experienced delays as vehicles struggled to navigate the affected section of the road. The incident drew the attention of passersby and security personnel, while efforts were initiated to manage traffic and facilitate the evacuation of the damaged truck.

As of the time of this report, authorities had not confirmed any fatalities or injuries resulting from the accident. Emergency responders and relevant agencies were reportedly working to remove the trailer and restore normal traffic flow.

Road users have been advised to exercise caution when approaching the area and, where possible, make use of alternative routes until the wreckage is completely cleared.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over vehicle maintenance and road safety, particularly for heavy-duty trucks operating on steep and heavily trafficked roads across the country.
