UCDA Demolishes Illegal Structures Across Umuahia

The Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) has carried out a major demolition exercise in Umuahia, removing about 50 unauthorized structures in a renewed effort to restore order and improve the city’s appearance.

The affected structures ranging from shops and shanties to containers and building projections were pulled down over a three-day operation spanning Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday. Key locations impacted include the ShopRite axis along the railway line and areas around Post Office Junction by Bende Road Tower.

The enforcement action comes roughly two months after UCDA reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating illegal developments that undermine the planned layout and aesthetics of the Abia State capital. The exercise, which received approval from the Abia State Government, is part of a broader initiative to sanitize the city and enforce urban planning regulations.

A variety of businesses were affected by the demolition, including car wash facilities, tricycle parts dealers, canteens, mechanic workshops, and boutiques. Despite the scale of the operation, many traders were able to retrieve their goods before the structures were dismantled by heavy equipment.

Observations at the demolition sites showed that most of the structures along the railway corridor had been completely cleared. Meanwhile, some displaced traders were seen discussing their next steps as they grapple with the aftermath of the exercise.

It will be recalled that UCDA General Manager, Kingsley Agomoh, had earlier warned that the grace period granted to owners of illegal structures had expired, signaling the agency’s readiness to enforce compliance.

The demolition underscores the government’s determination to maintain urban standards and ensure that development within Umuahia aligns with approved planning regulations.
