What You Need to Know About Dr. Muttaqha Darma, Nigeria’s New Housing Minister

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially inaugurated Dr Muttaqha Rabe Darma as the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, following his confirmation by the Senate. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the State House on Friday, marking a new chapter in the country’s housing sector leadership.


Dr. Darma takes over from Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, who recently stepped down from the role. During the brief ceremony, President Tinubu congratulated the new minister and emphasized the importance of his appointment at a critical period in Nigeria’s development journey.


The President highlighted Dr. Darma’s extensive professional background, describing him as a capable and experienced leader. He noted that the administration requires skilled individuals to drive progress in key sectors, particularly housing and urban development. Tinubu also urged him to remain adaptable and committed to serving the nation in any capacity required.


Dr. Darma is widely recognized for his contributions to governance, engineering, and development. He holds a Doctor of Business Administration from the University of Liverpool and a PhD in Industrial Engineering from Atlantic International University.

His academic journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Bayero University Kano, followed by a Master’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering from the University of Benin.


A member of both the Nigerian Society of Engineers and the Nigerian Institute of Management, Dr. Darma has built a strong reputation across public service and academia. He previously served as Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund between 2008 and 2012.


His public service experience also includes roles as Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, as well as Commissioner for Rural and Social Development in Katsina State. Beyond government service, he has contributed to academia as a lecturer at Bayero University, Kano, and has published extensively on governance and development issues.


Before his ministerial appointment, Dr. Darma was President of the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Human Development Centre, where he focused on advancing human development initiatives.
