The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is well positioned to win the 2027 presidential election, while dismissing the chances of opposition parties unseating the incumbent.
Wike made the statement on Tuesday in Abuja while speaking with journalists during a press conference. He urged opposition parties to concentrate on rebuilding their political structures rather than banking on the possibility of defeating Tinubu in the forthcoming general election.
According to the FCT minister, the current political strength of the opposition is not enough to mount a serious challenge to the President in 2027. He advised opposition leaders to begin preparing for the period beyond the election and address weaknesses within their parties.
Wike maintained that while opposition politicians may continue to campaign and criticise the government, defeating Tinubu at the polls would be difficult under the current political circumstances.
He said the opposition should instead focus on putting its political house in order and strengthening its structures ahead of future elections.
The minister also questioned the ability of opposition parties to convert their performances in individual states into a strong nationwide electoral campaign. He referenced recent voting patterns and argued that some parties had struggled to demonstrate the level of electoral strength required to compete effectively at the national level.
Wike further described the opposition as politically “depleted,” taking responsibility for his role in weakening its influence.
The comments come as political parties, presidential hopefuls and major political figures intensify preparations for the 2027 general election. The political landscape has witnessed increased realignments, defections and coalition-building as parties position themselves ahead of the presidential contest.
While Wike’s declaration reflects his assessment of the current political situation, the 2027 election remains subject to the decisions of voters and the eventual campaigns, alliances and electoral strategies of the various political parties.

With preparations gathering momentum, the coming months are expected to reveal whether the opposition can overcome its internal challenges and build a formidable national platform capable of challenging the ruling party in 2027.
