Peter Obi dismisses claims of avoiding Atiku as he emerges NDC’s sole presidential aspirant ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections.
Former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has dismissed speculation that he is deliberately avoiding former Vice President Atiku Abubakar amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during the Spier Dialogue 2026 held in Cape Town, South Africa, Obi clarified that there was no personal rift between him and Atiku, insisting that both politicians still maintain a cordial relationship despite recent political developments.
His remarks come amid increasing discussions surrounding coalition talks and possible alliances within the opposition bloc.
Obi, who recently emerged as the sole presidential aspirant of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) after successfully obtaining the party’s nomination forms, said his political decisions were guided by his vision for national development and effective leadership. His move to the NDC followed his departure from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where internal disagreements reportedly created tensions within the party structure.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate’s decision to align with the NDC alongside former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has fueled intense speculation about a possible political partnership ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
Political observers and supporters have continued to debate the likelihood of a joint ticket capable of challenging the ruling establishment.
Across social media platforms, Obi’s supporters have circulated optimistic projections and campaign-style maps predicting electoral victories in several regions of the country. Many of his loyal followers believe the new political movement could reshape the opposition landscape before the next general election.
However, critics have also questioned Obi’s repeated party movements and his ability to build stronger political structures in northern Nigeria ahead of the party primaries. Some analysts argue that his success in the 2027 contest may depend largely on how effectively he expands his influence beyond his traditional support base.

Despite the growing debate, Obi’s latest comments appear aimed at calming tensions and reinforcing the message that opposition leaders can maintain political relationships even while pursuing different ambitions ahead of the next presidential election.
