A member of the United States House of Representatives, Congressman John James, has called on the Nigerian government to ensure that all legal proceedings involving Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, strictly comply with constitutional provisions and internationally recognized human rights standards.
The call was contained in a resolution introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives, identified as H.Res. 1321, which urges Nigerian authorities to uphold the principles of due process, fair trial, and the rule of law in handling Kanu’s case. The resolution was reportedly introduced on May 22, 2026, and has been referred to the appropriate congressional committee for consideration.
According to the resolution, the Nigerian government is encouraged to conduct all judicial proceedings involving Kanu in full accordance with the country’s constitutional obligations and international human rights commitments. The measure also highlights concerns that have been raised by legal experts, human rights advocates, and international observers regarding aspects of Kanu’s arrest and transfer to Nigeria in 2021.

The resolution further references previous observations by international bodies concerning Kanu’s detention and legal status.
