Akpabio Swears In Four New Senators Following By-Election Victories
President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has officially sworn in four newly elected senators who emerged victorious in the recent by-elections conducted across four senatorial districts in Nigeria.
The swearing-in ceremony, held during plenary at the National Assembly in Abuja on Wednesday, marks a significant development in the composition of the 10th Senate as the new lawmakers formally assumed office to represent their respective constituents.
The newly inaugurated senators are Prof. Dayo Faduyile of the All Progressives Congress (APC), representing Ondo South Senatorial District; Envulu Anza of the APC, representing Nasarawa North Senatorial District; Ikeje Asogwu of the APC, representing Enugu North Senatorial District; and Olaka Nwogu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District.
Their emergence followed the by-elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday, June 20, 2026, to fill vacancies that arose in the affected senatorial districts. The elections were organised in accordance with constitutional provisions requiring the replacement of lawmakers whose seats became vacant.
Addressing the chamber after administering the oath of office, Senate President Akpabio welcomed the lawmakers and urged them to embrace their legislative responsibilities with dedication, integrity, and a commitment to national development. Their inclusion is expected to strengthen representation for millions of Nigerians across the four states and contribute to ongoing legislative debates and policymaking efforts.
Three of the newly sworn-in senators belong to the ruling APC, further increasing the party’s presence in the upper legislative chamber, while the PDP retained its foothold in Rivers South-East through the election of Olaka Nwogu.

Prof. Dayo Faduyile secured victory in the Ondo South by-election after polling a commanding number of votes to defeat other contestants. Meanwhile, Olaka Nwogu emerged victorious in Rivers South-East, filling the vacancy left after the death of former Senator Barry Mpigi earlier in the year.
Political observers say the inauguration of the four lawmakers could influence future legislative alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly as parties continue to consolidate their positions within the National Assembly.

The swearing-in ceremony signals the beginning of a new chapter for the affected senatorial districts, as constituents now have elected representatives to champion their interests at the federal level and participate fully in Nigeria’s legislative process.
