The Department of State Services (DSS) has released a carpenter, Mustapha Marwana, after an investigation found no evidence connecting him to terrorist activities or the Ansaru terrorist group.
Marwana, a native of Katsina State, was arrested during investigations into the abduction and killing of school pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
According to the DSS, an investigation panel conducted a detailed review of the allegations against Marwana but found no evidence establishing his involvement in the membership, financing, logistics or operational activities of Ansaru.
Following the outcome of the investigation, the Director-General of the DSS, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, directed that Marwana be released immediately.
The DSS chief also approved an initial compensation of N3 million for Marwana to assist him with his reintegration and livelihood following his release.
Marwana was subsequently handed over to his lawyer, Oghene Forgive. He reportedly expressed appreciation to the DSS leadership for what he described as a humane and considerate intervention.
The Service said the compensation was part of measures aimed at supporting individuals who are cleared after investigations, particularly those who may have suffered hardship as a result of mistaken identity or allegations that could not be substantiated.
The DSS further disclosed that more than N300 million has been paid under the current leadership to individuals who were cleared of allegations or affected by cases of mistaken identity.
The latest development highlights the agency’s stated commitment to ensuring that security investigations are conducted responsibly while providing support to individuals who are eventually cleared of wrongdoing.

The DSS said such measures are also intended to strengthen public confidence in its operations and reinforce the importance of due process in national security investigations.
