NDLEA Nabs 67-Year-Old Grandmother With Cocaine Hidden in Fake Plantains

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recorded another major breakthrough in its ongoing nationwide campaign against illicit drug trafficking with the arrest of a 67-year-old Nigerian-British grandmother who allegedly attempted to smuggle 13 kilograms of cocaine concealed inside fake plantain peels at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

According to the agency, the suspect, who reportedly works as a caregiver in the United Kingdom, was intercepted by NDLEA operatives during passenger clearance after arriving in Nigeria. A detailed inspection of her luggage revealed that what appeared to be fresh plantains were actually specially fabricated plantain peels used to conceal large quantities of cocaine.

The illicit consignment, weighing approximately 13 kilograms, had been carefully packed alongside other food items in an apparent attempt to evade airport security checks. However, vigilant NDLEA officers uncovered the sophisticated concealment, preventing the drugs from entering the country.

Cocaine Hidden in Orijin Bitters Cartons

In another successful operation, NDLEA operatives intercepted 5.8 kilograms of cocaine ingeniously hidden inside cartons of Orijin bitters. Investigations into the seizure led to the arrest of a PhD student in Anambra State, who is currently assisting authorities with further inquiries into the drug trafficking network.

The agency noted that criminal syndicates are increasingly adopting sophisticated concealment methods in a bid to outsmart security agencies, but emphasized that enhanced intelligence gathering and improved detection technology continue to frustrate their activities.

Tramadol Found Inside Modified Fuel Tanks

In Taraba State, NDLEA officers made another significant seizure after intercepting a vehicle transporting 43,980 capsules of tramadol hidden inside specially modified fuel tanks. The discovery highlighted the evolving tactics employed by traffickers to move illicit substances across the country.

The suspects connected to the operation were taken into custody, while the recovered drugs were seized for further investigation and prosecution.

More Drug Raids Across Nigeria

Beyond these operations, NDLEA carried out several coordinated raids in different parts of the country, leading to the recovery of substantial quantities of cannabis, methamphetamine, and other prohibited substances. Multiple suspects were arrested during the operations as investigations continue to dismantle the criminal networks behind the illegal drug trade.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying intelligence-driven operations, strengthening border surveillance, and collaborating with local and international partners to combat drug trafficking.

NDLEA Intensifies Fight Against Drug Trafficking

The latest arrests underscore the determination of the NDLEA to stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated drug trafficking syndicates. The agency also continues to complement enforcement efforts with public enlightenment campaigns aimed at discouraging drug abuse and encouraging citizens to provide useful intelligence that can aid ongoing operations.
