Gov. Otti Explains Why Nigeria’s First Manufacturing Technology UniPod Was Sited in Abia

Nigeria has taken a major step toward strengthening innovation, industrialization, and entrepreneurship with the official inauguration of the country’s first Manufacturing Technology University Innovation Pod (Manu-Tech UniPod) at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), in Abia State.

The pioneering initiative is a collaborative project involving the Federal Government, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), and the Abia State Government. It is designed to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial application while fostering technology-driven economic growth.

Representing Vice President Kashim Shettima at the event, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, described the UniPod as a strategic investment that will reshape Nigeria’s higher education system by promoting innovation, commercializing research findings, encouraging entrepreneurship, and creating sustainable jobs.

He emphasized that universities must move beyond conventional teaching and research to become centres for enterprise development, technology transfer, and industrial competitiveness capable of driving national economic transformation.

Delivering the keynote address titled “Science Meets Enterprise,” Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti said the decision to locate Nigeria’s first Manufacturing Technology UniPod in Abia reflects the confidence the Federal Government and the UNDP have in the state’s growing reputation as a centre for industrial growth and economic development.

According to Governor Otti, the project aligns perfectly with his administration’s development agenda, which focuses on innovation, industrialization, entrepreneurship, and the creation of quality employment opportunities for young Nigerians.

He noted that the facility would encourage researchers, students, and academics to concentrate on solving practical societal and industrial challenges instead of conducting research solely for academic advancement.

“The establishment of the Manu-Tech UniPod in Abia is a clear demonstration of the confidence the Federal Government and the UNDP have in our state’s enormous potential to drive innovation, manufacturing, and economic prosperity,” the governor said.

Governor Otti further applauded the Federal Government, TETFund, and the UNDP for partnering with the Abia State Government on what he described as a transformational project that will empower young innovators, entrepreneurs, and manufacturers.

Speaking at the event, the UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Elsie Attafuah, explained that the Manu-Tech UniPod forms part of a broader national innovation ecosystem aimed at connecting universities with industry, research institutions, manufacturers, and entrepreneurs.

She said the initiative would help position Nigerian universities as engines of innovation, economic growth, and global competitiveness while accelerating technology-driven development across the country.

Attafuah also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Federal Ministry of Education, TETFund, and the Abia State Government for their commitment to building an innovation-led economy.

She particularly commended Governor Otti for his vision of transforming Abia into Nigeria’s preferred destination for manufacturing, technology, and industrial innovation.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Professor Ursula Akanwa, described the inauguration as a landmark achievement in the university’s history.

She stated that hosting Nigeria’s first Manufacturing Technology UniPod reinforces the institution’s commitment to advancing science, technology, agriculture, manufacturing, entrepreneurship, and national development through practical innovation.

Professor Akanwa expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, the Ministry of Education, UNDP, TETFund, and the Abia State Government for selecting MOUAU as the host institution for the pioneering project.

The commissioning ceremony attracted senior government officials, members of the Abia State Executive Council, traditional rulers, academics, development partners, and other stakeholders committed to promoting innovation and industrial development in Nigeria.

The newly commissioned Manu-Tech UniPod is expected to provide students, researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs with access to modern manufacturing technologies, prototyping equipment, innovation support services, mentorship, and business development opportunities. The facility is designed to help transform research ideas into commercially viable products, startups, and sustainable enterprises, further strengthening Nigeria’s manufacturing ecosystem.
