Abia State has achieved another major milestone on Nigeria’s development landscape, emerging as the third fastest-improving state in the country according to the 2026 Philips Consulting State Performance Index (pSPI) Momentum Index.
The latest ranking highlights the pace of progress recorded by the state under the administration of Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, reinforcing growing recognition of Abia’s ongoing reforms and development initiatives.
According to the 2026 Momentum Index, which evaluated the rate of improvement across 33 Nigerian states, Abia recorded a positive momentum score of +0.67. The state ranked behind Enugu (+1.15) and Jigawa (+0.77), while outperforming states including Osun, Kano, Gombe, Akwa Ibom, Ogun, Lagos, Imo and Anambra.
The Momentum Index measures how rapidly states are advancing relative to the national average. Positive scores indicate faster-than-average progress, while negative scores reflect slower rates of improvement. Abia’s strong performance suggests that the state’s ongoing reforms are producing measurable and nationally recognized results.
The ranking further strengthens the growing perception of Abia as one of Nigeria’s fastest-transforming states. The government’s development agenda has focused on strategic investments in key sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, digital innovation, agriculture, security, economic development and public sector reforms.
Over the past few years, the state has embarked on major road reconstruction projects, expanded Smart School initiatives, strengthened governance reforms, improved revenue administration, promoted industrial revival, empowered young people and intensified efforts to attract local and foreign investments.
These initiatives have continued to earn national attention, with independent assessments pointing to sustained progress in governance and service delivery.
The latest recognition also reflects increasing confidence in Abia’s governance model, which emphasizes transparency, accountability, prudent resource management and people-centered policies aimed at improving the welfare of residents.
As the administration continues to pursue sustainable economic growth and long-term development, the state government says it remains committed to consolidating existing achievements while accelerating projects that enhance the quality of life for all Abians.
The Philips Consulting recognition serves as an independent validation of Abia State’s reform journey and reinforces its position as one of Nigeria’s emerging models for transformational governance, inclusive development and sustainable progress.
