Nigeria’s Chief of Defense Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has raised urgent alarms over the worsening security crisis in the Sahel, cautioning that if instability in the region persists, Nigeria could be the next to suffer serious fallout. Speaking in a video shared by TV Platinum, the General highlighted the deteriorating situations in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, describing them as dangerously close to collapse.
“The Sahel is burning. Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso are experiencing severe instability. If we don’t intervene and they continue down this path, I fear that within six months to a year, these states could collapse—and once that happens, Nigeria becomes the next target,” General Musa warned.

He emphasized that extremist groups and armed militias are exploiting the vacuum left by weak governance, posing a direct threat to the region’s stability. Experts echo his concerns, pointing to rising arms trafficking, cross-border terrorism, and displaced populations spilling into Nigeria. Musa urged swift, united regional and international action to prevent the chaos from spilling into Nigerian territory.
