Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has rewarded five students who represented Abia State and Nigeria at the 2026 International Schools Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar, with ₦1 million each, while announcing a full educational scholarship up to university level for the team captain, 15-year-old Esther Christian.
The announcement was made on Saturday, October 24, 2026, during a special reception for the award-winning students at the Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia, where the governor celebrated their outstanding performance on the international stage.
The education sponsorship, to be provided through the Alex Otti Foundation, will support Esther Christian throughout her education up to university level. The governor’s gesture also carries special significance as Esther lost her father when she was just four years old.
Otti Rewards Students, Teachers and Their School
Beyond the individual cash rewards, Governor Otti extended his recognition to other contributors to the students’ achievements.
He awarded ₦1 million to Onyinyechi Okonkwo of Ovom Girls Secondary School, who recently emerged as the winner of a national essay competition. Officials who accompanied the Abia debate team received ₦750,000 each, while Abia Junior Model Secondary School, Umuahia, where the champions study, received ₦1.75 million.
The governor also presented the students with their trophies, medals and certificates, commending them for their outstanding performance and for bringing honour to Abia State and Nigeria.
Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming the education sector through sustained investment, improved school infrastructure and expanded access to quality education.
He described the recognition of exceptional achievements as an important part of Abia’s identity, stressing that the state would continue to celebrate people who distinguish themselves through hard work and excellence.
“This is in the DNA of Abia State. We celebrate people. When you do well, we celebrate you,” the governor stated.
Governor Approves Participation in 2027 Competition
During the event, Governor Otti approved the students’ request to participate in the 2027 edition of the international debate championship, demonstrating his administration’s willingness to support their continued development and participation in global academic competitions.
While acknowledging the progress made in the education sector, he noted that more work remained to be done to achieve the desired transformation.
The governor’s remarks underscored the importance of sustained investment in education and the need to create opportunities for young people to develop their intellectual abilities and compete successfully beyond Nigeria’s borders.
Abia Students Win Four Trophies, 12 Medals in Qatar
The Chairman of the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Mrs. Lydia Ezinne Onuoha, who led the delegation to Qatar, described the students’ performance as exceptional, noting that they distinguished themselves throughout the competition.
According to her, the Abia team competed against representatives of six countries and excelled in challenging debate rounds that tested their knowledge, reasoning, confidence and ability to think critically under pressure.
She explained that during the five final rounds, participants were presented with impromptu topics and given only 15 minutes to prepare their arguments before presenting them to the judges.
Despite the pressure, the Abia contingent secured four trophies and 12 medals, earning recognition among the participating teams.
Their awards included Best International School Debate Team, Overall Best Team in the Junior Category, Best Debater and Best Leadership.
The students also ranked among the tournament’s top 10 speakers in a competition that featured more than 84 teams, further highlighting the scale of their achievement.
The performance has positioned the students as outstanding representatives of Nigeria and strengthened Abia State’s reputation for nurturing academic excellence among young people.
Education Officials Praise Otti’s Investment in Public Schools
Speaking at the reception, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi, described the students’ success as evidence of the positive direction of the state’s education reforms.
He expressed optimism that the achievements recorded so far represented only the beginning, adding that the impact of government investment in education was gradually becoming visible.
Ubochi maintained that sustained commitment to the sector would produce meaningful results and create better opportunities for students across the state.
Similarly, the Coordinator of the President’s Schools Debate Championship, Elder Oritu Dare, commended Governor Otti for the infrastructural development taking place in Abia.
Dare observed that the difference between his previous visits under earlier administrations and his recent experience reflected changes in the state. He added that the Abia team’s success had opened the door for Nigeria to participate in the next edition of the international competition scheduled to take place in Singapore.
The Abia State Coordinator of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Mrs. Unyime Umoette, also praised the administration’s efforts, particularly in improving the functionality of public schools.
She urged public office holders to adopt public schools in their respective communities and contribute to their development, stressing that improving educational standards requires collective responsibility.
Parents, Team Captain Express Appreciation
Speaking on behalf of the parents, Mr. Akamnonu Christopher thanked Governor Otti for hosting the students and recognising their achievements. He also commended the administration’s investment in education, describing the team’s international success as a source of pride for their families and the state.
In her response, the team captain, Esther Christian, recounted the team’s experience and expressed gratitude to the governor for his commitment to education.
She also appreciated the officials who supported and believed in the students throughout their preparation and participation in the competition.
Christian pledged that the team would continue working hard to make Abia State and Nigeria proud, while reiterating her request for approval to participate in the 2027 edition.
The event was attended by the parents of the champions and senior government appointees.
Otti’s Education Agenda and the Future of Abia Students
The recognition of the debate champions highlights the importance of investing in students who demonstrate exceptional academic ability and leadership potential.
Beyond the financial rewards, the scholarship announced for Esther Christian represents an opportunity to support a young student’s long-term educational journey, while the grants to the accompanying officials and their school acknowledge the wider community behind the team’s success.
For Abia State, the achievement offers a compelling example of how students from public educational institutions can compete internationally when provided with opportunities, preparation and support.
