The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh warning that 19 states across Nigeria may experience flash flooding in the coming days as heavy early rains intensify across parts of the country.
According to the agency, the gradual establishment of the 2026 rainy season could trigger increased surface runoff and flooding, especially in areas where the soil has become dry and hardened after prolonged heat. These conditions reduce the ground’s ability to absorb rainfall effectively, increasing the likelihood of sudden flooding in vulnerable communities.
States identified as being at risk include Zamfara, Nasarawa, Kwara, Oyo, Lagos, Ogun, Ekiti, Delta, Imo, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Edo, Ondo and Bayelsa.
NiMet warned that the expected flooding could lead to severe disruptions, including flooded roads, traffic congestion, destruction of homes and farmlands, and damage to critical infrastructure. The agency also noted that blocked drainage systems, electricity outages, and telecommunication disruptions may occur in heavily affected areas.
Health concerns were also highlighted, with authorities cautioning residents about the increased risk of injuries and the spread of water-borne and vector-borne diseases during flood incidents.
To reduce the impact of possible flooding, residents have been advised to clear drainage channels around their homes and communities, stay updated with weather forecasts, and avoid walking or driving through flooded roads. The agency also urged emergency response agencies and relevant stakeholders to strengthen coordination and preparedness measures ahead of intensified rainfall.

NiMet emphasized that early preparedness remains one of the most effective ways to reduce flood-related losses and protect lives and property during the rainy season.
