The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, following his reported claim that he was unable to afford medication for his late mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, before her death at the age of 89.
The APC, in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, October 4, 2026, questioned Amaechi’s reported financial difficulties and linked them to what the party described as his alleged inability to maintain himself outside public office.
The statement was signed by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, who also expressed condolences over the death of Amaechi’s mother. The party prayed for the repose of Dame Amaechi’s soul while wishing her son good health.
Amaechi’s political career was also highlighted by the ruling party. The APC noted that he previously served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation. The party further recalled his previous presidential ambition and his current position as the ADC’s vice-presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.
The APC also referenced an earlier reported statement attributed to Amaechi in which he allegedly said that his wife was responsible for feeding him after he experienced financial difficulties.
According to the party, the reported comments raise questions about how a politician who occupied several senior public offices could face financial challenges after leaving government.
The APC subsequently turned its criticism toward Amaechi’s 2027 vice-presidential ambition. The party argued that public office should not be regarded as a means of meeting an individual’s personal financial needs.
The ruling party also questioned Amaechi’s suitability for the vice-presidential position, relying on his reported remarks about his personal financial circumstances.
“No one can speak more to Rotimi Amaechi’s unfitness for the office of Vice President than Rotimi Amaechi himself,” the APC said.
The development adds another layer to the political contest ahead of the 2027 elections, with Amaechi now seeking the vice-presidential position on the ADC platform after years as a prominent figure in Nigerian politics.

While the APC has used the reported comments to challenge Amaechi’s political credentials, the remarks have also drawn attention to the broader debate surrounding the financial realities faced by former public officials after leaving office and the standards expected of candidates seeking high political positions.
